TSU Real Estate

Texas Southern University is a historically African-American university located on a 150-acre campus in Houston's historic Third Ward neighborhood. Initially named Texas State University for Negroes, TSU was established on March 3, 1947 by the Texas Legislature. Before that TSU was owned by the Houston Independent School District (HISD) and had been known as Houston College for Negroes.

Currently, 10,000 students and faculty comprise eight schools at TSU, including: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, the College of Education, the College of Continuing Education, the School of Technology, the Jesse H. Jones School of Business, and the Graduate School. The Thurgood Marshall School of Law is one of four public law schools in Texas.

As a "special purpose institution for urban programming," the University measures its success by the impact its graduates have on society. Texas Southern University has served as a cornerstone for developing the greatest potential in leaders from various socioeconomic, cultural, and racial backgrounds. Best known of these recent efforts is the Alabama Garden. A joint effort with neighboring residents of Houston's Third Ward, Alabama Gardens is a 56-bed vegetable garden at 2818 Alabama Street. The project is the largest urban community garden in the country.

Begun by local residents in 1985 and with subsequent land and labor donations from TSU, the garden was enlarged to provide an oasis for educational, recreational and fresh vegetables for area residents, most of it taken to shut-ins or the sick. The gardeners also host school supply drives, Easter egg hunts and holiday food drives for Third Ward residents.

The landmark The Third Ward to Main Street Connectivity Project is a collaborative, transportation initiative to link Houston's Third Ward community with the Main Street Corridor and light rail system creating essential east west, transportation and pedestrian connections.

Likewise, the art community has benefited greatly from the outpouring of talent from Texas Southern, which includes producing acclaimed vocalists, musicians, and visual artists. However, the single most significant area in which the University's graduates have had an impact is within the field of education. Approximately 40 percent of the teachers in the Houston Independent School District are graduates of the University.

The University of Texas offers a wide variety of men's and women's varsity sports. The Texas Southern University Tiger athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I-AA Southwestern Athletic Conference. Men's varsity sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, tennis, and track and field. Women's varsity sports include basketball, bowling, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
