Sunnyside was originally developed to provide homes outside the city, that were in close enough proximity to downtown Houston for residents to commute. The community's slogan is "Sunnyside Pride." The six square mile Sunnyside Area is located between Loop 610 and Beltway 8 off State Highway 288 south of downtown Houston and has a population of 18,629. A large landfill is located in the center of the area.

Sunnyside now includes a number of tract home subdivisions on typical suburban streets, as well as the original frame homes that characterized the town at its founding. These homes are interspersed with small churches, some old some new, of the original neighborhood. Students are served by the Houston Independent School District.

The median income in Sunnyside is $25,000 and the median home value in the area is $38,419. Over 41 percent of the housing units in Sunnyside are renter occupied. Recently, new residential and business developments have revived parts of the community, especially along Cullen Street.
