Shepherd Real Estate

Shepherd is a small town in San Jacinto County, sixty miles north of downtown Houston. Located near Texas' landmark forest preserve, The Big Thicket, dense Piney Woods and rolling landscapes, Shepherd stands in stark contrast to its urban neighbors to the south. This makes Shepherd one of Houston's most unique, albeit unlikely, bedroom communities. One note of interest, The Cox Radio Tower, one of the tallest constructions in the USA, is located near Shepherd.

The rural town of 2,029 is situated at the intersection of four important area roadways: U.S. Highway 59, State Highway 150, Farm road 2666 and FM 222. Shepherd sits halfway between the towns of Cleveland to the south and Livingston to the north.

By the early 1970s Shepherd's population had grown to more than 900, and by the mid-1980s the figure had surpassed 1,600, which made Shepherd the largest town in San Jacinto County. The number of businesses, largely related to serving the needs of new residents and visitors, also rose sharply. Nearby Lake Livingston, and the plethora of recreational opportunities afforded by it, was also a big draw for the community.

According to census 2000 figures, there were 744 households in Shepherd. The median income for a family in Shepherd was $33,138 and the median home value for the area is estimated at $112,000.
