Sheldon has a rich history as an early trading post providing essential dry goods, postal and telegraph services for the early settlers of the area. In its early years, Sheldon was isolated, heavily wooded and sparsely populated. The only thoroughfare into downtown Houston was a narrow dirt road. When the occasional trip to Houston was necessary for supplies, it took six to eight hours by horse and wagon.
Today Sheldon has a booming population of 18,039. Gone are the days when trapping and trading provided the chief income for the early settlers. At the northern tip of the Houston Shipping Channel, Sheldon is considered part of the North Channel Area.
