Sharpstown is a master-planned community in southwest Houston, Texas. It was one of the first communities to be built as a master planned, automobile centered community. This predominately middle-class community with hospitable neighbors, attractive brick homes and easy access to several Houston freeways has always been popular with families and urban commuters.The Sharpstown Area offers comfortable living for a range of lifestyles. Many cultural and ethnic influences are evident in the Sharpstown neighborhoods southwest of downtown Houston.
Small and mid-sized brick tract homes still prevail here. Multi-family options are also available in this area, with apartment, condominium, townhouse and duplexes available for rent in several clusters. A variety of shopping centers and restaurants are located in the area. Home prices range from $50,000 to $200,000. The area also is home to Houston Baptist University, which has 2,300 students. School-age children are served by schools in the Houston Independent School District.
Frank Sharp, the developer of the subdivision, made provisions not only for homes but also for schools, shopping and recreation areas. While this model has been duplicated countless times in the past five decades, at the time it was quite revolutionary, attracting national media attention. The development was dedicated in March 1955. Sharp also donated a 300-foot-wide strip of land through the development to the state of Texas for construction of U.S. Highway 59.
