Once a quiet settlement hidden among the tall pine trees of east Harris County, North Shore has seen a population explosion over the last 30 years that has brought it to the forefront as a major suburban residential area. While its history is relatively brief, North Shore has rapidly developed a name recognition known throughout the greater Houston area. The majority of retail and commercial developments target North Shore as a prime customer base. Most new home construction also is focused in this area. At the northern tip of the Houston Shipping Channel, North Shore is considered part of the powerful North Channel Area.

The North Channel Area consists of the small towns and communities whose location at the northern half of the Port of Houston's powerful shipping economy belies shared economic interests in the Port of Houston. The 25-mile-long the Port of Houston is a complex of diversified facilities designed for handling general cargo, containers, grain, and other dry bulk materials, project and heavy lift cargo. The North Channel Area supplies these services for the northern half of the Houston shipping Channel.

Residents are served by either Galena Park or Houston Independent School Districts. North Shore's convenient access to an outstanding highway system makes Houston's sports, entertainment and arts readily available, and gives residents the advantage of urban amenities to complement the area's hometown suburban setting.
