Missouri City Real Estate

Missouri City is a turn of the century railroad town that remains a hub for both industry and commuter transportation within the Houston Metropolitan Area. The area in which Missouri City is now located holds a significant part in Texas Railroad History. Thanks to the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway (BBB&C), which included Missouri City in its path as part of the Sunset Route. The line was integral for the Houston area in that it linked Los Angeles to New and was the first standard gauge railroad west of the Mississippi River.

Today, with an estimated population of 62,570, Missouri City has expanded considerably. Located mostly into Fort Bend County with a small portion in Harris County, some 17,069 households call Missouri City home, including 14,645 families.The median income for a Missouri City household is $77,762, well above the median income for the Houston Metro Area as a whole.

With the benefit of the railroad, Missouri City was already a commuter city for residents who, by train, commuted to adjacent towns like Stafford's Point and Sugar Land to work. The increasing use of the automobile along with road improvements including highways attracted a wealth of newcomers to Missouri City. A new generation of commuters was born and by the 1950s, the town was a popular "bedroom community" of Houston.

Missouri City has offers a plentiful stock of primarily single family housing stock, a unique feature area suburbs. Unlike neighboring Houston, Missouri City has been a zoned since 1981. Multifamily complexes including apartments and condominiums are rare finds due to the current zoning ordinance. Regardless diverse housing options abound with the median home cost in Missouri City estimated at $154,200.

Recent residential developments in Missouri City include the upscale, master-planned communities of Lake Olympia, adjacent to Quail Valley, and Sienna Plantation, situated south of Texas State Highway 6, on and around land once occupied by plantations where sugarcane and cotton were once harvested.

Since its pioneering days as a railroad town, Missouri City has seen tremendous economic growth, moving eastward, southward, and then westward. Within the last 20 years, an influx of middle-class African-American homebuyers made the subdivisions of Missouri City home. Their influence has helped shaped the cultural and economic vitality of the city.

The Fort Bend County portion of Missouri City is served by Fort Bend Independent School District, while the Harris County portion is served by Houston Independent School District.
