Mission Bend straddles the boundary of Harris and Fort Bend Counties. This forested development is a fairly young community, coming into existence in the late 1980's. By 1990, Mission Bend had a population of 24,945. That figure increased to 30,831 by 2000, and the community had several schools. Many residents continue to commute to Houston.

Of the 30,831 residents of Mission Bend at the year 2000 census, 8,978 households were reported. The median income for a family was $60,999.

Mission Bend residents in Fort Bend County are zoned to schools in the Fort Bend Independent School District. In addition, some areas of unincorporated Harris County across the county line may be considered "Mission Bend". Those areas are zoned to schools in the Alief Independent School District. Fort Bend schools include Mission Bend Elementary School, Hodges Bend Middle School, and George Bush High School. Alief schools that serve Harris County areas that are sometimes thought of as "Mission Bend" include Petrosky Elementary School, Miller Intermediate School, and Albright Middle School.
