The collection of neighborhoods along Houston's Martin Luther King Blvd. in south central Houston, are part of The South Park community - a broad post-World War II development south of MacGregor Park and mostly south of Loop 610. Recently, commercial development has revived along Old Spanish Trail near the intersection with MLK and the Shrine of the Black Madonna church has purchased and redeveloped a number of deteriorated properties near its sanctuary. In addition, new home construction is occurring in various locations throughout the area. The median income for the MLK/South Park Area is $25,000 and the median home value here is $38,114.

The area earned notoriety during the 1990's as home to a thriving rap scene. Rappers Z-Ro, South Park Mexican, Scarface, K-Rino, Point Blank and the group South Park Coalition all hail from South Park. Big Hawk and the legendary Screwed Up Records and Tapes are part of South Park rap lore also.
