Kirkwood is part of a unique area southeast of downtown Houston known as the Ellington/South Belt Community.The collection of principally retiree communties was named after the long anticipated and newly completed, Beltway 8 (Sam Houston Toll way) that runs through the area. The other half of the area's name came from Ellington Airfield, which is in close proximity to the Ellington/South Belt community.

Ellington/South Belt is an integral part of southeast Houston. It's prime location at the intersection of I-45 (Gulf Freeway) and Beltway 8 is only now being fully realized with completion of the much anticipated toll way. Ellington Field, a general aviation airport that was once a military training field, is at the eastern edge of the community. Alameda Mall is the center of a large retail and commercial district that spreads across both sides of the Gulf Freeway.

Kirkwood is one of the newer subdivisions in the area and was built around the same time as adjacent Sagemont and Scarsdale. Some of the older subdivisions in the community include Beverly Hills, Gulf Palms, and the Genoa town site. The original settlers of Kirkwood did not have a water district and the families living here then had none of the amenities routinely featured today. Drawing water from a ground well and traveling along dirt roads became the norm for the "pioneers" of Kirkwood. The grazing cattle and gulf marshes that once dominated this area have been replaced with an estimated 10,000 single-family dwellings here, most built in the last 20 years.

The completion of Beltway 8 has stimulated residential and commercial development throughout the area and new home construction is booming near the western subdivision of Bridgegate. According to year 2000 data, the median household income for the Kirkwood Area was $49,861 with the median home price holding at $78,026.

Residents of Kirkwood enjoy a host of amenities including a nearby hospital, community college, senior citizens centers, two libraries, a funeral home and wide variety of churches. Nearby Ellington and Hobby Airports are available and easy to access. Residents of Kirkwood are served by the Pasadena and Clear Creek Independent School Districts.
