The main attractions of the 35-acre complex are its many fine restaurants, recreational sailing, and amusement-park style rides. A stroll along the boardwalk reveals a wide variety of shopping and midway games, as well as a miniature train that traverses the entire area. A Ferris wheel and 36-foot carousel top off the theme park. Since the closing of Six Flags Astroworld in nearby Houston, the "Kemah Boardwalk" is now the nearest recreational and entertainment park in the Houston area.
Named for the Karankawa Indian word meaning "facing the winds," Kemah's location on the seafood rich Galveston Bay, has made it a lucrative fishing, shipping and shrimping village. With the addition of the "Kemah Boardwalk", the city now ranks as one of the fastest growing resort communities in Texas just a couple of minutes from both Clear Lake and Galveston.
Once considered a shrimping town, Kemah continues to celebrate an annual August Blessing of the Fleet and maintains an acute ecological awareness of the Galveston Bay estuaries and supports a number of educational and conservation programs.
The median income for a family in Kemah is $64,063 with most residents working in the fishing, shipping, tourism or retail industry. New construction subdivisions in the area range in price from the $140s to the low $200's.
