Independence Heights Real Estate

Independence Heights is a historical community located north of Loop 610 and west of I-45. After World War I, Independence Heights was the first town incorporated in Texas by African-Americans. Independence Heights was consolidated with Houston in 1929. Population growth after World War II led to the expansion of the community to the north with new housing developments and considerable investment by the Houston real estate community.

In 1989 a Texas Historical Commission marker was placed on the grounds of Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church to mark the city site. Today Independence Heights retains a population of around 14,206 residents with a median family income of around $26,373, well below the median income for the Houston Metro-Area. The median home value in Independence Heights is around $42,508.

A wealth of churches, most organized while Independence Heights was a separate city, retain a strong fellowship within the community. Some of these include New Hope Missionary Baptist, the Green Chapel African Methodist Episcopal, the St. Paul Colored Methodist Episcopal, the Ebenezer Methodist Episcopal, the Concord Missionary Baptist Church, and the North Main Church of God in Christ. Businesses include a cooperative store, grocery stores, cafes, and contractors. The majority of residents work in Houston, in nearby Houston Heights and in other areas.
