Highlands Real Estate

Highlands is located 30 minutes east of downtown Houston on the banks of the San Jacinto River. It was named due to the fact that when it was founded, the east bank of the river was higher than the west. The population of the Highlands was 7,089 at the 2000 census.

The majority of the land in Highlands is on a high riverbank. Highlands also contains the Lynchburg Ferry. At roughly nine square miles, the Highlands Community, also known as Elena, is on the Missouri Pacific line north of State Highway 73 and west of Farm Road 2100 in the industrialized area of eastern Harris County.

There were 2,564 households in the Highlands as of the 2000 census. The median income for a Highlands family was $49,655. Highlands students are zoned to schools in the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District. A private college preparatory school, The Chinquapin School, is also located in the Highlands. The Stratford Branch of Harris County Public Library serves Highlands.

The Highlands achieved international fame on the MTV show Beavis and Butt-head who both live in the once believed to be fictional town of Highland, Texas. The show was based mainly on the life of creator Mike Judge, who attended Highland High School.
