Galena Park Real Estate

Known as the energy capital of the world, Houston ranks as a leader in space technology and medicine, as well as petrochemicals and shipping. The early leaders' determination to make the city a leading port, although it was 50 miles from the gulf, resulted in the development of the Houston Ship Channel.

Many North Channel area businesses are dependent in one way or another on the Port of Houston -- the sixth-largest marine terminal complex in the world. Although much of the port area is outside the actual Houston city limits, Houston has always been more an economic community than a city. The various communities of the North Channel area are very much a part of that economy and contribute to it.

The mid-sized town of Galena Park one of these important North Channel Communities, extending north from the Port of Houston. Tucked between Buffalo Bayou to the south and Interstate 10 to the north, Galena Park offers convenient access to the metropolitan possibilities of downtown Houston and the industry rich Port of Houston, without compromising the feel of a small town community.

Primarily residential, the city's population remains steady at 10,341, after a decline during the 1980's. Low taxes and moderately priced houses and apartments characterize Galena Park and the surrounding North Channel Communities of Jacinto City and Channelview. Homes in this area range from the $50s to the $300s. Older, wood-frame houses and 1960s brick tract homes are still available in the older centrally located neighborhoods along Main St. In high demand by some, this increasingly rare housing style adds a distinct 1950's flavor, while newer subdivisions such as Cimarron, Home Owned Estates, Hidden Forest and Woodforest offer greater square footage and modern conveniences such as tennis courts, swimming pools and recreation rooms. Median home prices for Galena Park is $73,800 and the median family income balanced out around $34,000, most residents work at the Port of Houston or one of the surrounding petrochemical plants or commute downtown.

Amenities include East Houston Regional Medical Center, public golf courses and athletic fields. Students in Galena Park attend schools in Galena Park Independent School District The area's low cost of living, plentiful jobs and abundant diverse housing stock and outstanding highway system makes Houston's sports, entertainment and arts readily accessible. All told, Galena Park residents enjoy the advantage of urban amenities to complement the hometown, suburban setting of their neighborhoods.
