Dickinson is a growing shipping town in Galveston County 30 miles southeast of downtown Houston. The population was 17,093 at the 2000 census. Bisected by the Dickinson Bayou, the City of Dickinson has played a historically crucial role in the development of the Houston Shipping Channel Economy. The Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad was built directly through Dickinson and the line was critical a critical supply link during the American Civil War. Whether serving as an agricultural service center, a residential community, or mineral-oil processing industry, Dickinson's role as a commercial and transportation hub is the central focus of The Dickinson Railroad Museum Another impetus for Dickinson's early development came from Italian immigrants when a large group of immigrants from were forced to resettle in the Galveston and Dickinson area around 1900. Heavy recruitment of Italian immigrants from crowded eastern cities to Dickinson continued with much success. As of the 2000 census, there were 6,162 households in Dickinson, of which 36 percent reported having children under the age of 18 living with them and 55 were married couples living together. The median income for a family in Dickinson is $46,585. The City of Dickinson is part of both the Dickinson Independent School District and the Santa Fe Independent School District.
