With close proximity to not only Clear Lake, but to the Texas Gulf Coast, Clear Lake features one of the largest concentrations of sailboats in the nation, with many businesses, restaurants, and neighborhoods equipped with piers and slips, perfect for docking. In addition to water sports, Clear Lake is a golfer's paradise, providing both public and private courses.

Before NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center was built in the early 1960s, it was largely coastal prairie used for ranching. Today, the area includes the master planned community of Clear Lake City, the adjacent communities of Pipers Meadow and Sterling Knoll, and the Baybrook Mall retail center. The majority of the community lies in the corporate limits of Houston, while a small eastern portion is in the city limits of Pasadena. With so many highly educated parents, it's no wonder Clear Lake public schools are known for their rigor and high performance. Most of the schools in Clear Lake ISD are ranked exemplary by the Texas Education Agency. Clear Lake High School, widely considered one of the better high schools in the state. The University of Houston Clear Lake is also banked here, offering a number of graduate and post-graduate programs.
