3rd Ward Real Estate

At first glance, the Third Ward appears to be just another inner-city neighborhood in the midst of revitalization efforts, however, the Third Ward of Houston is determined to stand out as a cultural and historical landmark. Bisected by Scott Street, the Third Ward encompasses 15,463 residents in a primarily African American Community southeast of downtown Houston. Following Scott St. south, the historically and culturally rich community extends south from the University of Houston to Old Spanish Trail, north to the Gulf Freeway, west to Fannin Street and east to the H.B. & T Railroad.

Originally a small community of shotgun style houses and modest frame homes, the area's once thriving business district beginning to show signs of life following thirty years of economic decline. Texas Southern University leads this movement, spearheading support and organizing major community efforts to maintain and improve this historically rich District. Best known of these recent efforts is the Alabama Garden, a 56-bed vegetable garden at 2818 Alabama - the largest urban community garden in the country.

Begun by local residents in 1985 and with subsequent land and labor donations from Texas Southern University, the garden was enlarged to provide an oasis for educational, recreational and fresh vegetables for area residents, most of it taken to shut-ins or the sick. The gardeners also host school supply drives, Easter egg hunts and holiday food drives for Third Ward residents.

The landmark Third Ward to Main Street Connectivity Project is another major community renovation project coordinated by TSU. The Third Ward to Main Street Connectivity Project is a collaborative, transportation initiative to link Houston's Third Ward community with the Main Street Corridor and light rail system creating essential east west, transportation and pedestrian connections. With its inclusion of both Texas Southern University and the University of Houston - largely commuter campuses serving over 39,000s student -- the project will focus on improving and expanding transit access between the Main Street Corridor and Third Ward neighborhoods and institutions. The transportation project is the key to unlocking job opportunities within the Main Street Corridor, as well as opening up the neighborhood to the rest of the city and it's institutions.
